Reverend Ken Nagata
Assistant Minister, Rissho Kosei-Kai International of North America

An ex-engineer following the Buddha's path.

Rev. Ken Nagata, CFO of RKINA, in front of RKINA Buddhist Center in IrvineRev. Ken Nagata is the Chief Financial Officer for the Buddhist Center in Irvine (Rissho Kosei-kai International of North America).

Ken Nagata was born in in Tokyo, Japan on October 13, 1949, where his Maui-born father was serving the U.S. 8th Army. The war was over, but reconstruction of Japan was underway under General MacArthur.  His father served as an interpreter and translator.

It was during his time in Japan, Ken's father met his future wife.  After his military service term was up, Ken's father decided to serve as civil service employee for US government at a base near Yokohama and remained in Japan. Although Ken was not involved, his mother and maternal grandmother were devoted Rissho Kosei-kai members.  His mother had weak health, and Rissho Kosei-kai teachings returned her strength and wellness.

Ken attended American grade schools near Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture.  After high school, Ken moved to Los Angeles to pursue his interest in airplanes.  There he earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering.  He was then hired by Rockwell International.  During his free weekends, Nagata volunteered in the "Y-braves" program at a local YMCA for fatherless boys. Being the YMCA, the leaders shared Bible stories to entertain and guides. It was during this time, Nagata encountered religion and attended the Free Methodist Church.

At this time, Nagata's parents and siblings were living in Dallas, Texas.  His mother told him about the Rissho Kosei-kai in Los Angeles.  So, in 1975,  Nagata started to attend Service twice a month and join in faith discussions.  When Rissho Kosei-kai bought the downtown Los Angeles Church in 1976, Ken became a busy church member there.

As the aerospace industry ebbed, Ken turned to missionary work for Rissho Kosei-kai.  He was hired in July 2000 as staff of Overseas Mission Section in Tokyo and spent year and a half in Japan training. In 2002, he then served as the assistant minister in New York.  In 2003, Rev. Nagata was assigned to the San Francisco church as minister.

In 2007, the Rissho Kosei-kai Tokyo Center wanted to create a Liaison Center in the USA, so Rissho Kosei-kai International North America (RKINA) was born.  In support of RKINA, Rev. Nagata returned from San Francisco to his Los Angeles home base in 2008 and served as the Chief Financial Officer for RKINA until 2014.

I make peace instead of bombers and fighters. I drop words of faith and truth instead of bombs..... as life goes on.
