About us
Rissho Kosei-kai, with headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, is a Sangha composed of ordinary people who have faith in the Buddha and strive to enrich their spirituality by applying his teachings in their daily lives. At both the local community level and international level, Sangha members, guided by President Nichiko Niwano, are very active in promoting peace and well-being through altruistic activities and cooperation with other organizations.
WHAT DOES RISSHO KOSEI-KAI MEAN?
'Rissho' means living out the true words of the Dharma in our hearts and minds.
'Kosei' means perfecting ourselves through learning together and encouraging each other.
'Kai' means society or organization - for we cannot exist purposefully in isolation.
Rissho Kosei-kai was founded by Nikkyo Niwano in 1938 with Mrs. Myoko Naganuma and some thirty members. Rissho Kosei-kai International of North America (RKINA) is the regional office and a center for North America, located in Los Angeles. Like local Dharma Centers, RKINA also offers services and Buddhism classes online. With local Dharma Centers throughout the Americas and worldwide, our practice is, anywhere you are is "indeed the place of the way."

THE LOTUS SUTRA AND A SET OF FUNDAMENTAL BUDDHIST TEACHINGS
Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, founder of Rissho Kosei-kai, discovered that the set of fundamental teachings of Buddhism were perfectly incorporated into the Lotus Sutra. The Lotus Sutra seamlessly integrates its profound philosophy and high ideals with practical fundamental Buddhist teachings. This is why the Lotus Sutra is the primary scripture in which Rissho Kosei-kai members place their faith.
WHAT IS THE ONE VEHICLE?
The concept of the One Vehicle means that all of the teachings of the Buddha are for the purpose of leading all living beings to Buddhahood. At the same time, the ultimate meaning of the One Vehicle is that the whole universe is permeated by the Dharma, or Life as the source of all things, and that all living beings are sustained by it and together their entirety all things comprise a single living entity.
PRACTICE
The core of Rissho Kosei-kai members' practice is revering buddha nature, that is, paying homage to and revering all living beings.
Through the bodhisattva way, we practice to liberate all human beings and create harmony in society.
